Please note: the Coupons feature is only available for Pro and Advanced plans.
The ability to create and distribute coupons for potential customers in an effort to promote sales is one of the most popular marketing features that Zenfolio has to offer. Coupons may be amount-based (in which case, the amount is subtracted from the order total); they may be percentage-based (where the percentage amount is subtracted from the order total excluding sales tax); or they may be base-cost coupons, which allow customers to order products at base cost, bypassing any markup that’s been added.
Coupons can apply to these specific categories:
-
Prints and products
-
Digital downloads
-
Self-fulfilled products
-
Shipping cost
You may also specify a coupon expiration policy that’s based on either a certain number of uses, or a certain date.
Customers are able to redeem coupons during the checkout process on your website.
It is important to keep in mind that if you are selling at base lab prices, or if your coupon discounts the total amount to less than base lab prices, you (as the photographer) are responsible for the difference. Your account balance and credit card may be charged as a result.
One Coupon per Order
Only one coupon at a time can be applied to a single order. To apply two coupons, create a new coupon that combines the discounts of the two coupons, and then have the client apply that new coupon to the order.
Please also review Applying Coupons during checkout.
Coupon Types
Coupons can be created in five different formats:
-
A face value discount
-
A percentage discount
-
"At cost" discount
-
Shipping amount discount
-
Shipping percentage discount
For Advanced plan subscribers, the ability to create bulk Coupon Campaigns is also available.
A face value coupon discounts a specific amount from the order total. For example "$5.00 off of any order" is a face value coupon.
A percentage coupon applies a specified percentage off of the total order amount, shipping and tax excluded. For example "20% off your first order" is a percentage discount coupon.
An "at cost" discount changes selling prices from your price lists to base prices.

Expired and Deactivated Coupons
Once a coupon reaches its limit of uses or has reached its expiration date, the coupon will automatically be switched into an Deactivated status and can no longer be used on any orders by clients.
Deactivated coupons will continue to remain in your account and can be reactivated if you ever need to make that particular coupon available again. For example, maybe you have a holiday coupon that is used for a special discount you run for a week at the end of every year – you can just reactivate that coupon and set a new expiration date for it to expire after one week, and repeat this each year.
To view deactivated coupons in your account:
- Hover your mouse pointer over the Selling button in your account menu.
- Choose Coupons or Coupons & Campaigns from the dropdown menu.
- Check the Show Inactivate box.
This will reveal all deactivated coupons in your list and you can use the Reactivate button on the right-hand side to make that coupon active again. If you need to update the expiration date of the coupon, or change how many times the coupon can be used, be sure to click on the coupon itself and edit it.
