Your Site Menu is the main mode of navigation on your website; it’s the primary way that your website visitors will access your photos, built-in pages, custom pages, etc. Not only that, but you can use this menu to link to an external website such as a blog, your Youtube or Vimeo channel, Social Media Page or any other website on the internet.
By default, your Site Menu is pre-populated with links based on the Preset first applied to your website. However, you can always change the links, remove them, or add links to new pages or other Galleries at any time.
Please note that when new Galleries or Groups are created within your account, a corresponding menu item will not be automatically added for your website visitors to access it. Rather, you will need to follow the steps below to create a new menu item that links to that new Group or Gallery.
Click on any of these links to go directly to the desired section:
- Create a New Menu Item
- Create a Drop Down Menu
- Create a New Menu Items under a Drop Down Menu
- Edit an Existing Menu Item
- Organize Menu Items
Access Your Site Menu
Your Site Menu can be edited in the Customize Website View.
In the Main Menu within your account, hover your mouse pointer over Website, and then click Customize Website.
The page will refresh with a new customization menu at the top, confirming that you are in the Customize Website View.
The Edit Site Menu panel will be displayed on the left side of the page in the Customize Website View
Hiding and Showing the Edit Site Menu panel
For ease of use and access, the Edit Site Menu panel is displayed by default. However, the option is also provided to minimize this panel; once hidden, it will remain hidden until the photographer choose to show it again. This can be done by clicking on the three dot icon that appears on the left edge, and dragging it to the right.
Adding Menu Items
If you create a Custom Page, a new Gallery or Group, upload a PDF for your website, or perform some other website enhancing action on the back-end of your website, you’ll need to Add a Site Menu item to allow your visitors access to the content created. To add a new link to a Gallery, Group, Collection, Built-in page, uploaded PDF document, or external web page, follow the steps below.
-
Next to Edit Site Menu, click on + New.
-
A text field will appear where you can enter the desired Title for the new menu item. Click Enter or Return on your keyboard.
-
Under Link Menu Item to, select to which item you would like to establish the link:
A Gallery/Group/Collection
A built in page
An uploaded PDF document
An external webpage (choose this option to create a link to another website outside of Zenfolio). -
Next to Link Target click Select. A pop-up menu will load with related destinations (Group, Galleries, Collections, Custom Pages, etc). Select the desired target for the new menu item.
-
If desired, you may choose to check the box for Open in a new window to have the new page open in a new browser tab (as opposed to redirecting away from your website).
-
Check or uncheck the boxes for the areas of your website in which you would like the new item to be Displayed.
-
Click Update. Upon the page refresh, your new Site Menu item will load in the menu directory.
- Publish your changes before exiting Customize Website View to make those changes live on your site.

Adding a Dropdown Menu and Menu Items
Creating a dropdown menu containing your linked menu items is a great way to organize your Site Menu, as it allows you to group similar links together, consolidate menu items to save space, and create seamless ease for users navigating your website. Here’s how to do it:
- Next to Edit Site Menu, click on + New.
- A text field will appear where you can enter the desired Title for the new menu item. Click Enter or Return on your keyboard.
- Mark the circle for Show Dropdown Menu.
- Check or uncheck the boxes for the areas of your site in which you would like the new item to be Displayed.
- Click Update.
Please note that the dropdown menu must be populated with items, or it cannot be applied to the Site Menu. In other words, we cannot create a dropdown menu of items (essentially, just text) that aren’t yet linked to actual content.
For example, if you wanted to create a dropdown item Titled “Our Services” containing links to three custom pages underneath, you must first create the three pages to link the 3 new items to. More on this...
-
Next to the dropdown menu in which you would like to create the new dropdown menu item, click on the + .
-
A text field will appear where you can enter the desired Title for the new menu item.
A pop-up menu will load with related destinations. This may change to a dropdown list depending on what Menu Item action was selected.
-
If desired, you may choose to check the box for Open in a new window to have the new page open in a new browser tab (as opposed to redirecting away from your website).
-
Click Update. Upon the page refresh, your new Site Menu item will load into the Site Menu.
All done? Check it out: your new dropdown menu item will be displayed under the dropdown menu Title, and can be moved by dragging and dropping into the desired order.
Editing an Existing Site Menu Item
As we mentioned, each website Preset comes default with Site Menu items that we suspect may be helpful; however, if you want to delete or change these, go for it - they can be edited anytime. Here’s how:
- Click on the Pencil icon next to the menu item that you would like to edit.
- The Edit Menu Item panel will appear. Use the options displayed to edit the menu item.
- Click Update once you've finished editing.
- Publish your changes before exiting Customize Website View to make those changes live on your site.
Organizing Menu Items
Like your Site Menu items, not crazy about the order in which they’re presenting? No problem, it’s just drag and drop! Change the order of your Site Menu items simply by clicking on the grey texture icon to the left of the menu item's title, and dragging it to a new location.
Click Publish in the Customize Website View to push your changes to go live.
