As a website and business owner, it is important to always be aware of the possible scam or phishing emails that can be received at any time. Phishing is when scammers send messages trying to trick you into giving them your personal information. These emails often impersonate trusted brands like Zenfolio.
These scammers are in the business of tricking the recipients of their emails, so making the message seem as important or relevant as possible is a common way that they can get you to fall for their scamming scheme. Please be aware that these scams are not isolated to emails – physical mail and unsolicited calls are also used by scammers in the same way to try and collect information from you. However, emails are the most common and easiest for the scammers to collect information from you without you knowing.
When you receive a suspicious email, it is very important that you:
- Do not click on any links.
- Do not download any attachments.
- Do not reply to the message.
Clicking on links and downloading attachments from suspicious emails could unknowingly infect your computer with tools that the scammer can use to gain access to your secure information. |
Spotting a Phishing Email
While scammers change their tactics frequently, look for these signs of a phishing or spoof message:
- Requests for your bank account, username, password, social security number, or identity.
- A claim that your account is compromised.
- An unsolicited email with a link to verify your account information.
- Typos in the From email address.
- Suspicious links that don’t lead to www.zenfolio.com. Before you click a link, check the URL by copying it into your address bar without pressing Enter.
- Emails that mimic the Zenfolio design.
- Emails with .html attachments.
Most commonly, scammers will use your website's built-in Contact page. Please be aware that the built-in contact page will send these messages to you from a Zenfolio email address, but the message itself was not submitted by Zenfolio. You can easily tell if an email was sent through your built-in contact page by checking for the following message at the very bottom of the email: "This message was sent from the following page: YOUR WEBSITE ADDRESS" |
The below email is an example of a phishing email that was sent through a Zenfolio contact page with some key identifiers of how to tell this is a phishing attempt.
Please be aware that when someone submits a message through your website's built-in contact page, Zenfolio passes this message to you, making this email appear as if it came from Zenfolio. However, this is not a message directly from Zenfolio, and these contact page messages are sent by someone using the website's contact page and Zenfolio cannot stop messages from being submitted through the contact page.
If you do not use the built-in contact page, and you want to prevent potential scam emails coming through, you can turn off the contact form on the contact page. For more information about customizing your built-in contact page, see this link here.
